lease see the information below from the planning committee for the LA Regional.
Key highlights: Parking and Venue Food Policy.
We will discuss what the plans are for meals at the venue and come up with a plan. A BAG LUNCH MAY BE OUR BEST OPTION. Stay tuned
ROBOKONG will have SOME safety glasses at the event, but you know how great of condition they are in. I recommend you purchase your own safety glasses from Home Depot, Lowes or McMaster (they have great bifocal safety glasses for us seasoned veterans) and keep them with you at all times.
Hello FRC Teams,
On behalf of the FIRST® Robotics Los Angeles Regional Planning Committee I would like to welcome you to the 2018 Los Angeles Regional. We have some important information to share with you about the event so please read everything carefully.
We are in a new venue this year, which is the Pomona Fairplex. The address is
1101 W. McKinley Ave., Pomona, CA. http://fairplex.com/aboutus/maps_directions. The regional will be held in Expo Hall 9.
Teams will enter through Gate 17 and park in the main parking lot area, Thursday - Saturday. (see attached Fairplex map). There will be a $12 parking fee charged, per vehicle per day by the venue. They will allow in/out access during each day if you save your parking pass for the day.
There will be an area to park equipment trailers and other large vehicles on the fair grounds for overnight stay. No camping or overnight stay will be allowed. Details on this will be available at the event on Wednesday and Thursday.
Venue Food Policy:
There is no parking lot "tailgating" and no commercially prepared food is allowed at the venue/fairgrounds (this includes any prepared food purchased and brought in or delivered). Teams may bring bag lunches but it must be consumed in a designated team eating area and nowhere else in the arena or on the fairgrounds. Areas will be denoted by signage at the site. Individuals may bring personal snacks and lunch and teams will be allowed to load water into the pits during load in (but please be discreet bringing water in). Please make sure you communicate to all of team members and parents.
To make feeding your teams easier we are finalizing pre-order box lunches, through catering, for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We hope to have this nailed down within the next day or two and will send out the order form as soon as we receive it from catering.
Venue operated concessions will be available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Teams may load in and set up their pits on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm and Thursday morning from 7:45 to 8:30am. As a reminder pits may be set up during these load-in times but robots may NOT be unbagged or worked on. We encourage teams to take advantage of these load-in and set up times. Also, only 5 members from each team are allowed into the venue during load in. One of these 5 must be an adult mentor and everyone must wear safety glasses they provide. Please make sure to bring your robot Lock-up forms.
Load in on Wednesday evening will enter through Gate 1. At the gate please let the guard know that you are there to load in for the FIRST Robotics Competition and they will direct you where to go.
Load in on Thursday morning will enter through Gate 17. There will be signs directing to the load in area.
Vehicles cannot be left unattended or parked in the load in/out area. Please unload and return your vehicle to the parking areas on the attached map.
Load Out will take place starting at 1:00pm on Saturday. Please do not bring your vehicle to the load out area until you have all your team’s equipment staged and ready to load. Again, vehicles cannot stay unattended or parked in the load in/out area.
Please see attached map for entry gates and load in/out areas.
Safety glasses are required to be worn at all times by anyone in the pit or competition area. Please makes sure that you bring enough safety glasses for every member of your team (students and adults) as well as any visitors that may come from your team. The safety glasses we have on hand at the venue are for the general public visitors only and are NOT for teams. We ask to please help us with this to assure that there are enough safety glasses for the remainder of our events in California.
Additionally, please remind your team members and any visitors that may be coming to see your team that closed toe shoes are required in the pits along with safety glasses.
Women in STEM Event:
This year we will again be holding a Women in STEM Event hosted by Raytheon. We will feature high profile Women of Raytheon STEM, women leaders as hosts for tables of aspiring engineers, mathematicians and scientists for candid conversation on topics such as: Creativity, Collaboration, Problem Solving, and College and Career. The event will be held on Friday from 1:30 to 2:30 at the Sheraton Conference Center directly across from the venue. We encourage all female team members to attend that can. Oh yeah and we will be providing some light desserts. This is a student only event. Please see attached flier. Hope to see you there!
We need your team’s support in touring our many visitors through the regional. Our team members are the best to share their experiences with in FIRST with our guest and is why we are asking for your support. We are asking that each team have 2 members of your team to take a shift, on Friday and/or Saturday, in our Student Ambassador program. Please have your team members sign up for a shift/s on Thursday at pit admin.
Any singers that would like to represent your team? Would they like to lead us in singing the National Anthem at our opening ceremonies on Friday and Saturday? Tryouts will be held on Thursday at 1:00PM. Acapella only please, soloists and small groups welcome. Meet at Pit Admin table.
Special Notes from the Planning Committee:
A few local businesses worth noting:
Home Depot: Home Depot Locations
Kinko’s: Kinko's Locations
It is critical that everyone in the pit area wear safety goggles at all times. This includes team members, mentors and visitors.
Make sure you read Team Updates for observations from the earlier regional competitions that may help you avoid some problems. They can be found at Firstinpsires.org.
Notes from David Brinza, Lead Robot Inspector:
The primary goal of our Robot Inspectors is to ensure that every team passes inspection before the pits close on Thursday. Our secondary goal is to make achieving the first goal as painless and as fun as possible for everyone. Inspections are performed to ensure safety and fair play for the teams. Section 8 of the Game Manual specifies Robot Rules which for the basis for the Robot Inspection Checklist. Section 9 describes inspection and eligibility to participate in matches – please review it!
Here are a few reminders and tips to speed up the inspection process:
Once again thank you for choosing to compete at our regional. We look forward to the competition ahead and wish the best of luck to you and your team this season. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you or your team members.
